Monitoring and Evaluation: Environmental Health

Natural Resource Inventory:
The objective of the natural resource inventory is to identify habitat or community types, understand how plant and wildlife species interact and develop plant and wildlife species lists unique to your farm. This comprehensive habitat inventory will assist you in recognizing significant natural resources on your land, as well as key habitat features. Upon completion you will have significant background information to assess habitat quality, potential risks of further habitat degradation and establish conservation goals for possible habitat improvement.

Farm WaterWatch:
The Farm WaterWatch program was developed by the Alberta Fish & Game Association in response to producer’s questions about their impact on surface water quality. The program emphasizes a farm specific approach that gives landowners the tools and support they need to go from awareness of water quality issues, to planning of best management practices specific to their farm.

Program participants have the opportunity to gather information on how their agricultural activities may be affecting surface water quality. The on-farm service provides a confidential and practical way for producers to collect and analyze surface water runoff from individual fields and pastures, or monitor the changes in water quality within a creek on their lands. Participants will have the opportunity to analyze samples from a number of sites on their land, during several runoff events.

Participants will develop a watershed map and runoff supply model of their farm. On farm consultation is also provided to assist the producer in identifying potential risks to surface water quality, and planning any best management practices which would improve riparian habitat or mitigate impacts on water quality. The program can also play an important part in developing an environmental risk management strategy, and taking part demonstrates due diligence in addressing potential environmental liabilities. Finally, the program can also save
