Knowledge
Operation Grassland Community has been priveledged to
work with our members - a diverse and passionate group of
environmental stewards. These land stewards have provided
OGC with unique insights and significant knowledge on balanced
approaches to protecting and enhancing prairie habitats. This
knowledge has enabled us to produce socially and economically
balanced fact sheets, natural resource inventories and management
plans for species at risk. Using this knowledge building as
a base, we have been able to work closely with several members
to implement larger habitat
enhancement projects.

Natural Resource Inventories:
This comprehensive habitat inventory is designed to assist
our land holder members in recognizing significant natural
resources on their land, as well as key habitat features.
Natural Resource Inventories provide significant background
information to assess habitat quality, potential risks of
further habitat degradation and establish conservation goals
for possible habitat improvement.
Management Plans for Species
at Risk:
In preparing Management Plans for a specific Species at Risk,
Operation Grassland Community (OGC) works with the landholder
to develop a management strategy for that species’ habitat.
Management Plans are developed to create awareness about the
status of the particular species, its biology, and habitat
requirements, and to provide detailed recommendations for
managing that habitat. We also wanted to offer praise for
a job well done, as species at risk depend upon agricultural
practices that provide suitable habitat.
Public
Presentations:
OGC also reaches out to community groups, industry, and schools
through public presentations throughout southern Alberta.
To expand our reach into schools Operation Grassland Community
partners with the Science Alberta Foundation to distribute
the education crate: “Burrowing Owls and Cows”.
As part of the important work done by the Science
Alberta Foundation this crate is lent to schools and youth
groups across the prairie region.
